October 4, 2017 – Vancouver, BC
The EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League is pleased to announce the third annual BCSPL COLLEGE ID WEEKEND taking place in 2018, presented by the Western Canada College ID Camp, and hosted by Thompson Okanagan FC.
The event will take place on May 26-27, 2018, at McArthur Island in Kamloops, BC. Twenty six university coaches attended the 2017 weekend for their recruiting and scouting purposes, and the BCSPL has expanded the 2018 weekend by bringing the boys and girls together in one location, included grade 10 players in the event, and has increased offerings to the attending university coaches with a VIP tent on site all weekend. There will also be a scholarship information session including university coaches on the Saturday evening for all players and their parents.
Another great addition for 2018 will see Alberta Tier 1 teams participating, bringing the total number of 2001 and 2002 born teams to 40. Some of the Alberta teams already committed includes the Calgary Foothills, Calgary Blizzard, Internazionale SC of Edmonton and Sherwood Park Phoenix. All eight BCSPL franchises are excited to welcome our Alberta neighbours to the showcase event, and look forward to some great soccer in front of university coaches from across North America. All of the 2001 and 2002 teams will play 2 games each over the weekend. In 2017, coaches attended from as far away as StFX University, St. Mary’s University and Acadia University in Nova Scotia. Ontario was also represented by Windsor University, along with a majority of attending coaches from Western Canadian USports and CCAA schools.
The BCSPL General Manager, Matt Holbrook, commented “we’re excited to expand this showcase event with a new presenting sponsor and a great host club, and we know this is a valued component of our season for players looking forward to the next phase of their soccer pathway. Holding the event at a great tournament venue in Kamloops will ensure all our boys and girls BCSPL teams, along with our invited Alberta teams, have the best opportunity to be seen by university coaches at one central location”.
The BCSPL has placed a heavy emphasis on post-secondary opportunities as part of the player development pathway, and in June 2017, 124 graduating BCSPL players moved onto university soccer opportunities, including 72 alone earning spots with USports schools in the Canada West conference.
